Meg Ryan has published a heartfelt tribute to the late director Rob Reiner, who was her director in the iconic romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally.

A Heartbreaking Event

Reiner was discovered deceased alongside his spouse, Michele Singer Reiner, at their residence in LA this past weekend.

“Oh how we will miss this man…” Ryan wrote on Instagram, alongside a picture of them together. “We thank you, Rob and Michele, for your belief in true love, fairy tales, and laughter. Your trust in people's goodness and your love for this nation are remembered.”

Charges Filed

Reiner’s son Nick, 32, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and was in court today. He’s being held without bail. It’s been reported that Reiner’s daughter Romy found her father’s body.

“I must hold onto hope that their tale doesn't conclude here, that awareness can be heightened from this,” Ryan went on to write. “I don’t know, but my guess is that they would want that to be hopeful and humane, to be something that brings us all to a greater understanding of one another and to some peace.”

Children Share Their Grief

Reiner’s other children Jake and Romy released a message today. “Language fails to capture the daily agony we endure,” they said. “The tragic, shattering loss of our parents is an experience no one should have to face. They were more than parents; they were our closest confidants.”

Colleagues and Friends Remember

Ryan’s co-star, Billy Crystal, similarly honored Reiner via comments shared yesterday together with remarks by Larry David, Martin Short and Albert Brooks.

“His skill for comedy was unmatched, his ear for dialogue perfect, and his dramatic precision was sheer elegance,” the tribute noted. “For the actors, he loved them. For the writers he made them better. His finest trait was granting creative liberty. He valued input and made you part of the team. Everyone felt like part of a crew. His direction was a gift, but his legacy is broader.”

A Lasting Cinematic Legacy

When Harry Met Sally was a box office and critical triumph in 1989, grossing more than $93 million worldwide and earning Nora Ephron an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.

Rob Reiner met Michele Singer Reiner while making When Harry Met Sally. The pair were introduced by Barry Sonnenfeld, a fellow filmmaker and pal.

Reiner’s notable filmography featured classics such as Misery, Stand by Me and The Princess Bride. The director and his wife were husband and wife for over three decades.
