The vehicles for the 2026 season are set to be more compact, agile and eco-conscious compared to current models.

The world of Formula 1 has revealed the official vocabulary that will be used to describe the advanced features of its revolutionary 2026 rulebook.

The championship is implementing what is potentially the most significant regulation change in its illustrious history for the 2026 campaign, featuring new chassis and engine rules and the required adoption of 100% sustainable fuels.

The updated 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, which keep the hybrid V6 layout, boast a substantially higher energy storage, driving key advancements in the aero packages.

Throughout races, competitors will carefully oversee electrical energy – sometimes even hot laps – to secure the optimal performance.

Extensive fan consultation were conducted with a mix of viewers, including new, casual and core fans, to determine which terminology would aid comprehension of the central aspects of the 2026 changes.

The stated goal was to make a set of intricate new areas of the racing as easy to grasp as possible for the broadest viewership.

Consequently, previous placeholder terms for certain devices – such as "modes labelled X and Z" for the moveable wings – have been discarded in favour of descriptive names that succinctly convey the real-world effect of the technology.

What's the New Technology?

Regulators explain that racers will have increased agency to choose strategies regarding battery management, regeneration, and conservation.

The 2026 rules feature a series of modes that will be clearly indicated on TV overlays to aid the audience's understanding of the race battle.

  • Attack Mode: This takes over from the current DRS. It provides a short boost of battery power deployable when a competitor is within one second the leading car to assist with an pass.
  • Boost Mode: This is a on-demand battery discharge from the hybrid system that can be utilized during overtaking or defending. It grants the pilot full engine and battery energy at the push of a button.

Both of these crucial modes will have to be deployed strategically, as the total energy is restricted.

  • Active Aerodynamics: Both the car's wings adjust their angles – spreading on the high-speed sections for reduced drag and top speed, and sealing in the turns for maximum downforce.
  • Recharge: Drivers can replenish their battery with regenerative braking, or during throttle lift at the straight's end or in certain corners where only reduced throttle is applied.

2026 Car Specifications

The 2026 cars will be smaller and lighter relative to current models, with a distance between axles shortened by 200mm to 3,400mm, overall width narrowed by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the minimum weight reduced by 30kg.

Cumulative downforce is anticipated to be reduced by approximately fifteen to thirty percent, although teams will undoubtedly recover some as they optimize their packages.

Air resistance has been slashed by 40%. The vehicles will employ adjustable aero systems – both wings will move on the straights to cut resistance and boost top speed and revert into place for maximum cornering performance.

Pirelli tyres will keep the current rim size, but the rubber compounds will be slimmer, by 25mm at the front and three centimetres on the rear.

2026 Engine Regulations

The new power units will have an roughly half-and-half distribution in horsepower generated by the petrol engine and the ERS, up from about 20% battery contribution this year.

The ERS setup is made less complex through the deletion of the complex turbo energy recovery device, the intricate and expensive device that recovered energy from the turbocharger.

All vehicles will be required to run on 100% sustainable fuel, created from biomass or synthetic industrial processes.
