Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Renewal for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness found an audience and turned it into a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."

A President's Endorsement

The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky sensibility.

"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family go about their daily lives.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to help comedy break out of its long-running sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

The Path Forward

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well help usher in that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to bask in the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
