Eurovision Was Once a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Transformed Into a Strategic Method to Sanitize Conflict.

A recent acronym emerged a couple of months after the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Injured child with no living relatives”. This term is found only in Gaza, per insights from health professionals including child health specialists. Normally, it is unusual for medical staff to attend to a child who has been bereaved of their complete family. However, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary concerning the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of anywhere else in the world. No sense of normalcy in many doctors arriving back from a sea of ruins with accounts of children being deliberately targeted.

A Hell on Earth Despite a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and major human rights organizations have stated that genocidal acts are ongoing. Officials has denied these accusations, just as it refutes all charges it is accused of. But while traumatised orphans are now suffering from the cold in temporary shelters, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from advancing its declared purpose of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, although several European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, apparently, is what unity resembles.

The contest, notably banned Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “grave situation in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza appears to be completely different.

A Selective Vision

Forget the fact that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what appears to have been an attempt to inject politics into Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have surged. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. None of this, apparently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – almost double the projected longevity of someone in Gaza today. The event will proceed, but it will likely never recapture the camp joy it historically embodied. A competition that once promoted togetherness has now become a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
