I thought I edged it - Alex Carey on review reprieve.

Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey admitted he thought he had feathered the ball when he was reprieved on review during day one of the 3rd Ashes series Test versus the English.

After surviving on 72, Carey proceeded to score a fine 106 to guide the hosts reach 326-8 at the close in Adelaide.

The Incident

Australia were 245 for 6 when Carey looked to play a cut shot to seamer Josh Tongue.

England lodged a strong appeal, thinking they had detected an edge, but umpire Ahsan Raza was unmoved.

Following captain Ben Stokes opted to review the on-field call, the technology reviewed by TV umpire Chris Gaffaney showed a spike however this came before the ball had made contact with the bat.

Gaffaney further stated he believed there was a space between the bat and the ball.

Consequently, Carey was given not out.

"I thought there was a feather or some sort of noise when it passed the bat," said Carey.

"Being given out would have prompted a review, though not a confident one. It made a convincing sound near the bat."

Technology Debate

Discussion has swirled about 'Snicko'' during the Ashes contest after a series of dubious moments.

England's bowling coach David Saker suggested the touring side may pursue this latest incident to a higher level with match referee Jeff Crowe.

"I don't think we've done anything about it so far but after today, maybe that might go a bit further," Saker remarked.

"We've had doubts about it throughout. It's disappointing that this is a post-play discussion. It is what it is."

Personal Milestone

The ton was his maiden in Test cricket against England.

It was also an heartfelt moment for Carey, whose father passed away in recent months. Carey's wife was emotional in the crowd as the batter celebrated by looking to the skies.

"A hundred on home soil with loved ones present is unforgettable," said Carey.

"You can probably understand my glance skyward. I'm trying not to tear up. It was a fantastic feeling."

Not New to Furore

Carey has been at the centre of Ashes debate before.

He was the keeper who famously dismissed Jonny Bairstow at Lord's in the 2023 series, resulting in a heated final day.

Speaking about his survival he added: "The technology clearly wasn't synchronized. It is just the way cricket goes - sometimes you have a bit of luck."

"I might have gotten away with one."
