New York's next mayor confirms his intention to make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point in his campaign.
An Iconic Home
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for most New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.
However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central platform, hesitated to declare he would live there promptly following his triumph in November.
"My choice rested on the security of my family and the need to directing my full attention on enacting the platform on affordability voters elected me on," Mamdani said in a statement.
A Fond Farewell
Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area renowned for its diverse cultural enclaves and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Although my address will change there, the community will continue to reside a part of me and my work," he said.
Political Debate
During his campaign, Mamdani tied his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.
But his critics, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing even though he is from a prominent family.
Previous Exceptions
Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which concluded in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a place for official events, and championed significant upgrades of the aging mansion.
A Grand New Home
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience an environment very different than his previous Astoria home.
Adorned in cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.
Internally, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated consistent with the home's historical period.
The compound, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what people claim," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city regulates on how much property owners can increase rent each year.
Tenants consider these apartments crucial resources as the housing expenses outpaces the means of many residents.
It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
