Gus Atkinson increased England's injury problems after leaving the ground on the second morning of the Boxing Day Test in the Ashes series.
Atkinson pulled up with his hamstring immediately following a delivery of the fourth over at the MCG.
Team management indicated Atkinson had experienced "tightness" and would spend time away from the action for further assessment "in the coming hours".
The concluding match of the tour at the SCG gets underway on Sunday, 4 January.
The English side has been without fast bowlers Mark Wood to a knee injury and another paceman with an abdominal strain on this Ashes tour.
Matthew Fisher was called up as cover for Wood.
Atkinson struggled during the first two matches, taking just three wickets.
He was left out of the third Test, only to be brought back for the Boxing Day match to fill the void.
Atkinson performed better in the fourth Test, taking two wickets with the ball, and scoring 28 runs while batting as one of just three English batsmen to reach double figures.
Post a single over late on the first day, he resumed for the second day's play and removed Scott Boland Scott Boland caught behind.
However, at the end of that over, he sent down a variation to Travis Head and suddenly grabbed at his leg.
The English bowler was recalled for the Melbourne match after being left out the previous Test.
