As I walk into the room, Lamine Camara picks up a soccer ball he clings to throughout the conversation. This serves as a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” states the Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and natural ability convinced clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. “He was against me to play football simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

Eventually, on “a special day,” he received his dad's approval to pursue his career in the sport. Another challenge was his small stature, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

However, the famed academy – the institution that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following Camara was named the best player in a local competition, Génération Foot were “shocked” to learn he was without a contract. They moved fast. “They took me straight to the academy. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.

A Landmark Season and European Arrival

This move put him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to the title and earning player of the tournament.

Soon after, he signed for Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” says the youngster. He has lived alone in Europe, a choice his family support to maintain his concentration.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional skills. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from dead-ball situations are notable assets. Camara confesses a need to temper his competitive fire, after being shown red early in his spells at each French club. “It is a habit that is following me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Goals

At Monaco, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Currently, attention is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. If you beat England on their soil…,” he says, referencing a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the English top flight, he is focused on Monaco at present. “I feel really comfortable here,” he affirms. He is often ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about winning the senior Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. If you beat England in their own country… it gives you belief.”

Moving forward, Lamine Camara combines humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
