Triple Most Valuable Player Jokic sustains a 'heartbreaking' injury to his knee.

The star center in action
The Denver Nuggets star secured the NBA's Most Valuable Player title in three of the past four years.

Triple NBA Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic sustained a "gut-wrenching" injury to his knee when the Denver Nuggets lost 147-123 at the Miami Heat.

The Serbian center injured himself late in the first half during an inadvertent contact with fellow Nugget Jones.

His teammate came down on the footwear of Jokic, who instantly fell to the floor grabbing his knee.

The 30-year-old, that leads the league this season in rebounds and assists, had a score of 21 points and eight dimes in the matchup before incurring the injury.

The player will have an scan on Tuesday to evaluate the seriousness of the issue.

"Immediately, Jokic understood he was hurt," said Nuggets coach David Adelman.

"Injuries are part of the game. Any player who is injured, it's gut-wrenching, particularly somebody as important as he is. We'll find out more on Tuesday."

"We will continue as a team. Clearly, at this moment, I'm more concerned just about Jokic as a person and the disappointment of going through a situation like that."
